Speaking & Media

Robby Russell, on stage and on air.

As Planet Argon's CEO, he has spent more than two decades helping engineering teams maintain the software their business runs on.

His talks explore the decisions that shape long-lived applications: how teams manage technical debt, modernize without rewriting, maintain open source projects, and adapt their development practices as AI changes how software gets built.

About Robby

Robby Russell founded Planet Argon in Portland, Oregon in 2002 and has led the team ever since. He created Oh My Zsh in 2009 and still helps maintain it, and on the Maintainable podcast he has spent years asking practitioners how they live with the code they inherited.

He has been part of the Ruby on Rails community since 2005, and his talks stay close to the unglamorous work of keeping software running: framework upgrades that have been deferred for years, making the case for maintenance to the people holding the budget, and knowing when a rewrite is the wrong answer.

I'm best known for a project I've kept alive since 2009. It's the same work our team at Planet Argon has been doing for other people's long-lived codebases the whole time.
